Living Colours new video provides a strong statement about an epidemic in America. “Who Shot Ya?” a remake of Notorious B.I.G.’s song, hits home with a topic of gun violence. Vernon Reid, guitarist for Living Colour, is very active in social issues that affect his community.
The video opens up with a black-and-white image of a Police Officer pointing a gun at the back of a figure dressed in a hooded sweatshirt with his hands up. With that image frozen, you can hear a narrator say, “Gun violence takes the life of an African-American man every five hours.” The intro comes in with Reid’s powerful riff like you’d expect from a player with immense talent.
You see statistics throughout the video about gun violence in America, as well as names of victims of gun violence. Some of the names are more familiar than others. There are also images of people that have a red X appear on their face. This is a powerful message about an epidemic here in the United States.
The talented Reid’s playing is heard throughout the song. Aggressive tone with punchy riffs. At the end of the video, all of the band members standing together and saying “We can’t change the world unless we change ourselves.” A very powerful message from a group with an immensely talented guitar player.
